On 27 November 1651, Simon Rodrigues Nunes signs an affidavit, written in Dutch, before notary public Benedict Baddel. According to the affidavit, British warships had plundered Michael's carrier and its cargo during transportation from the Canary Islands to the United Provinces: ‘… in the course of his voyage from the Canaries to these lands taken by the English and brought to England’ (quoted in Israel, 2002, p. 134). The costs—for starting legal procedures—were advanced by Antonio Fernandes Carvajal, Michael’s legal representative in London (Spinoza, mercator & autodidactus, p. 55, q).

Simon Rodrigues Nunes is also mentioned in a legal deed made by notary Baddel on 15 February 1655. In the deed, one Willem van Erpecum and Jarig Jelles, Spinoza's friend and confidant, declare at the request of Nunes that they had bought several barrels of raisins from the latter in September 1654 (cf. Spinoza, mercator & autodidactus, pp. 26–7, V,2). The first documented contact between Jelles and Spinoza dates from [March] 1667 (< 1667.[03].03*), but the 1655 document points to the fact that Spinoza may have met Jelles through the business contacts of his father.
