Johannes Koerbagh studied philosophy in Utrecht (1653) and theology in Leiden (1662). Toghether with his brother Adriaan, he was in close contact (late 1650s, early 1660s) with the coterie around Van den Enden, and Spinoza. Embarking upon a career as a Reformed preacher in 1660, Johannes developed heterodox, spinozistic opinions through his contacts with the Collegiant colleges in Amsterdam which brought him into a virulent conflict with the Kerkenraad in 1666 (cf. Meinsma, p. 297; Israel, 2002, pp. 188–90). See: NNBW, vol. 7, cols 719–721; VandenBossche, 1978; Van Heertum, 2011 (mainly on the 1673 auction catalogue of Johannes Koerbagh’s private library). For a reconstruction of Koerbagh’s (lost) album amicorum (before 1659–early 1660s, fifty-four inscriptions): Mertens, 2011.
