Francesco Lana Terzi, an assistent (1652–4) of Athanasius Kircher, was professor of physics and mathematics at Brescia. There, he performed a large number of physical, optical and alchemical experiments based on Baconian principles. In the 1680s, he embarked upon writing a twelve-part encyclopedia of science (Magisterium artis et naturae) of which eventually only three volumes were published. See: Baldwin, pp. 54–8.
