Sybrant Cornelisz was a notary public (a common-law notary) who was admitted to the profession in 1616. In 1635 he bought a manor (nowadays called ‘Amstelrust’) at the Amsteldijk (no. 319) named Groenhoven (‘Green Court’). The earliest known document mentioning Michael's name as an Amsterdam entrepreneur is an affidavit (a sworn statement of fact) in Dutch made by Cornelisz on October 8, 1627. The affidavit reads:
